Since 1978, Genelec have enjoyed dominating the world of music and broadcast production with their active loudspeaker range. The emergence of Dolby Atmos has gone a long way to solidify their place as market leaders with their high-quality SAM series of speakers. Yet not everyone mixes exclusively with loudspeakers, and at times prefer the headphone option.

The Holy Grail of headphone monitoring has always been to mirror the listening experience to that of loudspeaker monitoring.  Genelec’s clever solution to this age-old conundrum is the newly released Personal Reference Monitoring Solution – a 9320A SAM monitor controller and Reference Measurement Microphone with a brand new product, the 8550A Professional Reference Headphones.

Last year, Genelec introduced the UNIO system, leveraging the power of their Smart Active Monitor range, GLM calibration software, Aural ID headphone technology, and 9320A monitor controller.  There is a serious depth of ‘under-the-hood’ science going on, but Genelec have come up with something that provides the ultimate in personalized monitoring.

It all starts at the Genelec factory in Finland where a 9320 and a set of closed-back headphones are uniquely paired to provide a truly neutral experience. The advanced electronics within the matched 9320 assist in the calibration of the headphones. Once the units have been shipped to you, the calibration experience can be elevated to a new personal level. Using the optional Aural ID software, you take a video of your head using your mobile phone that helps calculate the manner in which audio reaches your ears. This effect is totally unique to all of us and is called the Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) - Aural ID’s cloud-based calculation engine then models your features to calculate your own personal HRTF, which can then be applied to your headphone monitoring feed.

Personal monitoring has never been this good!
