Glasgow Caledonian University is a beacon for rising talent, and student, Catriona Lawire, epotomises the ongoing success for their audio technology  students.

Catriona is a musician and sound technician living in Glasgow and a recent Audio Technology graduate. Her interest in the field of audio came from years of playing instruments, and the opportunity in her final year of secondary school to volunteer on the sound desk for school events.

Although Catriona began with the intention to train to become a live sound technician, she found that her university course introduced her to a number of other areas which furthered her interest. Her favourite experiences in university were learning music programming with Max/MSP, creating interactive audio systems using microcontrollers, learning to design and develop analogue and digital electronic systems, volunteering for live events, and going on a semester abroad to Berlin. She is particularly interested in the relationship between visuals and audio. For her honours project she created a system which took visual input on a Raspberry Pi and used a newly developed low-powered machine learning algorithm to track a person’s movement alongside sensor data from an Arduino module and converted these signals to audio.

She is planning on continuing to work as a live sound technician and will use the Pro Tools subscription for writing and recording music with friends. In her future she would like to train as an audio equipment repair and/or manufacture technician.
