Krotos - Reformer ProApr 07, 2020 - 10:53
Edinburgh based company ‘Krotos’ is one of few that are really on the forefront of innovation when it comes to audio processing. Starting with their first product ‘Dehumaniser’ (which grew out of a University project btw), everything they’ve been putting out on the market has been incredibly unique.
Their newest product ‘Reformer Pro’ is no different in that regard. A ‘Reformer Pro’ is a natural evolution of their last years release ‘Reformer’.
A quick reminder, ‘Reformer’ is a plugin that lets you control the playback of library sounds/foley in a very novel way. And it’s not just simply pre-recorded audio, there’s also a bit of procedural/generative element to it under the hood (as it has always been the case with all the ‘Krotos’ creations). To trigger the sounds you would use either MIDI or any pre-recorded or real-time audio sources (like your voice for example). ‘Reformer’ then would react to a different qualities of that input in real-time (things like amplitude, duration, transients etc.) to shape the new sound. This has a direct practical benefit. For example, instead of going through the hassle of recording/searching for right SFX, editing, layering etc. all you’d need to do is literally to make some weird noises into the microphone till your happy with how it sounds so it matches your project and you’re set! Other ways the ‘Reformer’ could be used would be to add an extra layer/texture to your original recordings by blending both sources together. And of course, there’s also no limits to what you can achieve through sheer experimentation.
‘Reformer Pro’ takes this whole concept up a notch. A few of the main new features are:
Ability to blend 4 different sound sources/libraries and a new XY panning pad to control the blend levels of the sound sources.
Option to use your own libraries while letting Reformer's smart algorithms take care of the technical stuff.
A new continuous mode that works very well for creating ambiences.
So, if you're feeling experimental and would like to give it a try a free ten day trial version is available on their website.
