Success became
increasingly spasmodic in the seventies
and eighties although the club did win
the Central Sectional League Cup in its
inaugural season and repeat the feat four
years later in season 1972/73. It was in
this period that Benburb reached their
sixth Scottish Junior Cup Final losing
out in 1980 to Baillieston after a replay
at Hampden Park. During that decade Benburb
won the West of Scotland Cup in 1983 defeating
Port Glasgow and won the Central League
First Division undefeated. This league
was won again five years later.
Season 1999/2000
was to be Benburb’s most successful
since the heady days of the thirties. The
club won the Central League Premier Division
and the Central League Cup. They also reached
the semi-final of the Scottish Junior Cup
only to lose to Whitburn on penalty-kicks.
The West of Scotland Cup was to return
to Tinto Park after a gap of 19 years in
2002. Sadly this was the last trophy success
enjoyed by this fine old club. Since then
the club have endured their worst run in
the history of the club, suffering three
successive relegations. Co-Managers Frank
Lovering and Dennis Donnelly are confident
that they will lead Benburb back to where
they belong, the top echelons of Scottish
Junior football.
