Benburb Football & Athletic
Club began playing competitive games in January
1899 when they lost to Cambuslang Hibs 5-0
in a Glasgow North-Eastern Cup tie at Whitefield
Park. The first Benburb committee was:
President – Mr
Wm. Smith
Match Secretary – Mr A. Park
Treasurer – Mr
A. McDougall
Committee – Mr J. Ferguson, Mr
H.M. McDonald, Mr A. Easler and Mr R.S. Montgomery
Season 1899/1900 was Benburb’s first full
season although they were restricted to playing
cup ties. On 30 September 1899 Benburb defeated
Glasgow Hibs 13-0 in their first ever Scottish
Junior Cup tie. In fact, Benburb won their first
cup in that season when they defeated Elder Park
2-1 in the South Side Cup Final. The following
season Benburb leased Govandale Park, their very
first ground. Benburb were to remain at Govandale
Park until 1911. Benburb’s first match at
Govandale Park on 25 August 1900 resulted in a
4-1 win over Renfrew Victoria. Benburb, in their
first full season at their new home, entered the
Western League although even at that early stage
in their history their ambitions lay much higher.
At the turn of the last century, the Glasgow Junior
League was the place to play. Alas it was very
much an elitist league and as a result Benburb
were to be denied entry until 1905 as they were
considered not to have a big enough support. Benburb
reached their first big cup final when they lost
to Parkhead 3-1 in the Glasgow Junior Cup Final
in 1902, but this still wasn’t enough to
secure a place in the top league. Season 1904/05
saw the Glasgow Junior League introduce a second
division. Benburb entered this league and won it,
although this didn’t guarantee them a place
in the Glasgow Junior League the following season.
Thankfully Benburb were elected into the Glasgow
Junior League at the AGM and from that point never
looked back. Benburb’s first season in the
Glasgow Junior League saw them finish a creditable
fourth place. Benburb lost the use of Govandale
Park at the end of season 1910/11 and for a couple
of seasons played at the PSA Athletic Ground in
Helen Street. The beginning of season 1913/14 saw
Benburb move into Gymnasium Park and this a move
that was to prove successful as the club went on
to win the Glasgow Junior League for the one and
only occasion.
Saturday 31 May 1924 is a day that has gone down
in the history of the club as the day they won
two cup finals within hours of each other. In the
afternoon Benburb defeated Shawfield in the Glasgow
Consolation Cup Final and in the evening the same
side defeated Pollok in the Kirkwood Shield Final.
What makes this feat the more remarkable is that
the side played every night of the week leading
up to the Saturday.
Finding themselves homeless in 1924, Benburb shared
St.Anthony’s Moor Park for a season before
moving to Old Tinto Park in 1925. It wasn’t
until seven years later that their present ground
became their permanent home with Tinto Park as
we know it today being officially opened on 24
September 1932 with a 2-0 win over Maryhill Hibs.
The new surroundings obviously suited them because
the thirties and forties saw Benburb at their zenith.
Between 1934 and 1949, the club reached the semi-final
of the Scottish Junior Cup on no less than six
occasions. More importantly, this passage of time
also brought them two successes in the competition
as they defeated Bridgeton Waverley and Yoker Athletic
in the 1934 and 1936 finals respectively. In addition
Benburb would go on to win the West of Scotland
Cup in 1941 and 1942, Central League Cup in 1936
and become Divisional League Champions for four
successive years during the Second World War.
